Himalaya Water Tower

12 Mar

People-oriented design

Housed within 55,000 glaciers in the Himalaya Mountains sits 40 percent of the world’s fresh water. The massive ice sheets are melting faster due to climate change, posing possible dire consequences for Asia, especially for the villages and cities that sit on the seven rivers fed from the Himalayas. The Himalaya Water Tower is a skyscraper located high in the mountain range that serves to store water and helps regulate its dispersal to the land below as the mountains’ natural supplies dry up.

The skyscraper, which can be replicated en masse, will collect water during the rainy season, purify it, freeze it into ice and store it for future use. The water distribution schedule will evolve with the needs of residents below.

The lower part of the Himalaya Water tower is comprised of six stem-like pipes that curve and wind together and collect and store water. Like the stem of a plant, these pipes grow strong as they absorb their maximum water capacity. In each of the six stems, a core tube is flanked by levels of cells, which hold the water. The upper part of the building – the part that is visible above the snow line – is used for frozen storage. Four massive cores support steel cylindrical frames that, like the stems below, hold levels that radiate out, creating four steel tubes filled with ice. In between the two sections are mechanical systems that help freeze the water when the climatic conditions aren’t able to do so, purify the water and regulate the distribution of water and ice throughout the structure.

At the bottom of the structure, surrounding the six intertwined water tubes is a transport system that regulates fresh water distribution to the towns and cities below. The curving channels connect the mountains to the villages, and are also hold within them a railway for the transport of people and goods.

Guessing Game #10

12 Mar

Welcome to another round of the Guessing Game. The rules are simple: try and guess what this cropped image/product is and leave your comment below. The winner gets loads of love and affections and of course crowned, the winner of this round!

This is the Flat Flower is Aspersed; s shower panel inspired by the form of a mobile phone! The design is a clever combination of water-heater and showerhead. LEDs around the temperature dial provide a visual feedback, blue for cold, green for warm, orange for 38 degrees, yellow for hot, and red for high-temperature water. The designers explain, “The showerhead is hooked into position in a manner that calls to mind the handset of an old-fashioned telephone.”

推荐 Take a Green Break

12 Mar

People-oriented design

The Green Air is a mass of greens that you plant atop your monitor and use it as a frequent reminder to stop and smell the flowers! I am going to skip the technical details that are well explained in the ensuing images, and focus on the fact that we do need to contemplate our workspace and environment. In a sterile office setup with mechanical schedules, placebos like a mock green patch can do wonders for productivity and our health. Green Air is just another example of how we can pep up our space.

Fascinating Folding

12 Mar

People-oriented design

The focus of this beautiful chair is its one-of-a-kind seat that is formed by a solid wood piece that has been cut into strips and folded at critical points to form the shape. From the underside and back, the Melon chair appears to be one fluid piece, but view it from the front and you’ll immediately notice its unique seat accented by contrasting soft, white fabric that makes the seat appear as though it had been effortlessly draped over the frame.

2013 Ford Fusion

11 Jan

Upscale design lines, advanced technology and unmatched fuel economy in an all new sedan

Fusion-exterior.jpg

You can’t help but notice the 2013 Ford Fusion, a midsize category-busting car hell-bent on improving suburban driveways around the world. The new Fusion is the first car that very clearly articulates the ONE Ford mantra (cars designed for a global market) and the company’s Kinetic design language (which debuted on the Evos concept car launched in Fall 2011 in Frankfurt).

Fusion-interior.jpg

Ford sold Aston Martin (in 2007) and Jaguar (in 2008) along with the other brands in their Premier Automotive Group. Perhaps the best thing the come out of that experience was the importance of design and how it can elevate a very expensive hand made car as well as a car you’ll find all over your neighborhood and in the parking lot at every mall. There was no shortage of comments at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit yesterday that the new Fusion looked “Aston-like” or “Jaguar-like,” things you don’t usually hear about the most crowded and pedestrian segment of the automobile market. Part of this may be attributed to the raised hexagonal grill, narrow lights and rear license plate surround, which Ford’s VP of Global Design and Chief Creative Officer J Mays says “create a terrific stance.” Sexing up the midsize market is good for Ford, and good for all customers who seek to be inspired by design regardless of price point.

Fusion-front-end.jpg

The Fusion brings a new level of features to an inexpensive, accessible car—or, as Mays puts it, “a car you are proud to drive.” Standard features include Ford’s Sync voice-activated control system and a lane drifting warning system. Options include blind-spot warning and automated parallel parking systems—things you’re more likely to see on high end luxury cars.

Fusion-Fuel-cell.jpg

Ford offers the extremely fuel efficient Fusion in five different four cylinder engines—an existing gasoline engine, two new EcoBoost turbo engines, a hybrid and plug-in hybrid. Mays elaborates, “the mpg on this car is truly spectacular—26 mpg on the standard model, 47 mpg on the EcoBoost Hybrid, and 100 mpge on the Energi model. It’s just game changing.”

Fusion-rear.jpg

From what we’ve seen so far, Ford has come together to achieve something their competitors have failed to do—create an economy car that is desirable, practical, and affordable. I’m looking forward to road testing it.

The 2013 Ford Fusion will be available in the U.S. mid-2012 (with all models available by Fall 2012), and will be available in Asia and Europe as the Mondeo in 2013.

Vacuum Packed Suitcase

28 Nov

People-oriented design

It’s quite the trend to have suitcases with an expandable hood to accommodate more clothes and stuff. However very few have stopped to consider vacuum packing clothes, to make more space. The Pumpack is one such suitcase design where it includes a pump that helps to compress clothes to make more packing room. For those who are going to complain about creases, I suggest you carry a travel iron. I for one think we need to develop this design thoroughly!

Pumpack is a 2011 red dot design concept winner.

Pedal Your Way to Fitness and Light!

28 Nov

People-oriented design

The idea behind Healthy Electricity, a stationary bike, is nothing new. It converts kinetic energy into electric energy, to juice up your gadgets and maybe work small lamps etc. What’s cool is the implementation of the idea and the final outcome of the bike. The sleek form makes it easy to fit into any household and tempt you enough to at least get fit and electric!

Healthy Electricity is a 2011 Liteon Award entry.

Public Spaces and Not So Boring Furniture

28 Nov

People-oriented design

The Furniture Collection by Arco da Velha, a Portuguese design furniture brand, has launched a new set of products for public spaces and and domestic environments. There’s a consistency in the minimal design which quite frankly looks better than most public space furnishings. There’s something juvenile about the way the color palette jumps off these very linear lines. It feels lighter, less cosmetic because if all this stuff were in black and white, it would look like my dentist’s office.

Designer: Arco da Velha

Cosmic Time

28 Nov

People-oriented design

One of our favorite companies ZIIIRO just released the latest star from their cosmic laboratory called “Celeste.” The instantly recognizable design combines 2 previous concepts into one so the hour and minute demarcation is more clearly defined. It works by two overlapping transparent discs to create a fluid gradient as time passes. It comes in 4 different colors but 2 are already sold out. Why am I not surprised. This is a hot item which is also why it’s included in our holiday gift guide.

Designer: Robert Dabi
