Visualizing Light Controller

29 Oct

People-oriented design

The To Be Touched Range is a series of intuitive light controllers for the LivingColors series by Philips Design. The models in this range from a simple on/off switch to one that includes a dimmer. The beauty in these switches is the visual color effect that they imbibe. The color saturation and intensity are directly proportionate to the lighting settings chosen. So a deep color ring suggests that the lights are at their brightest. It also has a proximity-detection and sleep-mode: The device wakes up, showing the color ring, when a finger approaches. If no one is within range of the device after 15 seconds the backlight is switched off and the device goes into sleep mode.

How it works

The main iconic color ring is touch-based and backlit for direct feedback / feedforward. It therefore can change its appearance depending on which functionality mode is selected by using the touch mode buttons with intuitive icons above the ring (for example color, saturation and intensity for the color user interface). With the To Be Touched user interfaces you have a choice of an infinite variety of colors –at the touch of a finger. In short, you control light with light!

Currently in 4 models:

  • On/off/dim (IR)
  • Color Temperature (DMX)
  • Color (DMX)
  • On/off/dim (Dali)

A Sharp Needle Eye!

29 Oct

People-oriented design

The routine while sewing is to cut the thread with a pair of scissors (or teeth!), but since scissors are known to play truant when you need them the most, here is an alternate solution. The Cut Needle. The eye of this special needle has a sharp blade towards the lower-inner eye. The thread tends to stay around the upper eye area whilst sewing, so when you need to cut off the thread, simply snap it over the sharp blade. Teeth and scissors both are not needed! Awesome!

Panning The Bin

29 Oct

People-oriented design

There is one job that I don’t really have to do: sweeping. Why? Because I’m blessed with maid-service and my house-help really does a darn good job of it. So when I showed my help this Bin Pan, she was eager with excitement, pestering me to bring in one for the home. It is a clever design, to integrate the pan with the dustbin. It looks nice and works well, both at home and at office! Guess I owe her this one! One Bin Pan coming up!

Bed with Toilet

29 Oct

People-oriented design

When I think of a bed with a built-in toilet, the first thing I think of is Liz Lemon or maybe Homer Simpson. But it’s not that, that’s not what we’re talking about! This is a serious matter. This is the Dignity Bed designed by Enda Thomas. This bed is made for physically impaired folks who have trouble making their way to the toilet. There’s a built-in dry toilet facility where waste is contained in an electronically sealed waste bag. Can you believe it?!

All the functions of this magnificent machine are controlled by a hand set. Dignity Bed is antibacterial protected and easy to wipe clean.

This is so weird to write about.

Imperial Flatboy Motorcycle

29 Oct

People-oriented design

Star Wars influence? Inspiration taken from Daniel Simon? Yessir, indeed. This is a motorcycle concept going by the name “Bugatti startos” designed by Bruno Delussu. This name, Bugatti startos, means “Snake Road,” a fabulous name for a rather snake-like automotive. With a body made of fiberglass to make the entire thing light, setting the rider in the same place as a racing bike (lying on the bodywork,) and a cute traditional speedometer.

Believe it or not, this motorcycle uses an internal combustion engine, NOT an electric. Wow, I never thought, but always hoped, that this day would come. A day where the designer has to explain themselves for having anything other than an energy-conscious engine. Welcome to the future of responsible thinking? I hope so. Some words from Bruno Delussu:

Being a motorcyclist myself, I love the sound of a motorcycle engine (reminiscent of a raging lion), so the engine is a traditional internal combustion engine rather then electric, as the new trend would have it (a matter of ecology)

Also, Bruno notes that this project is mainly a fun one, and that thusly this is the world’s first motorcycle with no method for steering. Straight only!

Double Hook All The Way

29 Oct

People-oriented design

How many times have you looked at that hook by your door, wishing it was more than just a hook? How many times have you seen a hook there, wishing it was two hooks? Check it out, man, now it can be. Designers Peter Ulbrich and Oliver Zaiser have a lovely little nubbin for your pleasure right here. It’s basically an art object, but when you add a hanger or hang a coat over it, bam! It’s a double hook, right in front of your eyes.

It’s called the “Drop” and it’s really fresh. We’ve got a couple hooks hanging by our door that’d be much better off as drops, that’s for sure. Lovely baubles for your life.
