“It Looks Like a Purple People Eater to Me” Movie Mask Craft

Purple people eater mask craft

Have you ever seen the movie “The Purple People Eater” from the 80s? My brothers and I  used to watch it when we were kids. If you never saw it. The movie is about a loveable quirky alien monster named Purple who is furry, purple with one horn and one big eye, who came to Earth to join a Rock n Roll’ band (he play Rock n Roll’ music through the horn on his head). There is more to the plot, but not much it’s a silly kids movie. I remember liking it as a kid, rewatching it now, it’s quite lame. Last month I  played the movie for my 4-year-old, who absolutely adored it. LOL! She is often singing the theme song and has been asking to do a purple people eater craft, ever since we watched it. So this morning I finally gathered together our craft supplies and we sat down at the table and created this cute purple mask while watching the movie again! What do you think? Does it look like purple? She is certainly happy! She was excited to change into something purple and play with the mask.

  • Purple paper plate (or a white one painted)
  • Purple construction paper
  • White printer paper
  • Large index card
  • Purple craft foam
  • Large googly eye
  • Purple yarn
  • Purple pipe cleaner
  • Craft stick
  • Purple sharpie
  • Hot glue gun
  • Glue stick

  • In the movie, Purple’s wings look like butterfly wings. I found a printable template on FreeKidsCrafts.com and printed them out. Using a glue stick, I glued them to to the purple construction paper and used the purple sharpie to trace the lines. Then cut the wings out leaving the purple paper outline.
  • For the horn… My friend recently threw a unicorn-themed birthday party for her 1-year-old daughter. They had pastel unicorn horns to use for photo props. Since I had that on hand, I used it to trace a horn that looked like his. Then cut it out.
  • I took the yarn and measured around his head, how long we wanted it, then cut several strands the same length.
  • I have some foam shapes for crafting, my mom had given us. I cut the foam into his eye shape and hot glued the googly eye onto it.
  • I took the purple pipe cleaner and measured how big we wanted his mouth and snipped off the end. I then bent it into shape and hot glued the cut ends onto the ends of the bigger pipe cleaner.
  • Then I carefully glued it all together onto the plate. Starting with the mouth, then his eye, the hair layer by layer. Then I glued on his horn, wings and the craft stick to hold up the mask.

If you do decide to make this craft or any of our crafts. We would appreciate it, if you can share a picture on our Facebook page . We would love to see how your art projects turn out!

XOXO, Cameo

One-Eyed, One-Horned Flying Purple People Eater Lyrics

Well I saw the thing coming out of the sky
It had one long horn and one big eye
I commenced to shakin’ and I said oo-wee
It looks like a purple people eater to me
It was a one-eyed one-horned flying purple people eater
Sure looks good to me

Well, he came down to earth and he lit in a tree
I said Mr Purple People Eater don’t eat me
I heard him say in a voice so gruff
I wouldn’t eat you ‘cos you’re too tough
It was a one-eyed one-horned flying purple people eater
It sure looks strange to me

I said Mr Purple People Eater what’s your line
He said eating purple people and it sure is fine
But that’s not the reason that I came to land
I wanna get a job in a rock ‘n roll band
Well, bless my soul rock ‘n roll flying’ purple people eater
Pigeon-toed under-growed flyin’ purple people eater
One-eyed one-horned it was a people eater
What a sight to see!

Well, he swung from the tree and he lit on the ground
He started to rock really rockin’ around
It was a crazy ditty with a swinging tune
Wop bop a lula wop bam boom
One-eyes one-horned flying people eater
Ooh, it sure looks strange to me!

Well he went on his way and then what do you know
I saw him last night on a TV show
He was a blowin’ it out and really knockin’ them dead
Playing rock ‘n roll music through the horn in his head!
